Lesson 1: The Pursuit of Happiness Takes Practice

This first task may prove to be the most thought-provoking one in your Happiness course. The assignment is for you to answer a simple question: What is happiness? To facilitate this task, I want you to write a “happiness letter” in the form of a personal letter to yourself.

Write your happiness letter by hand and keep it in a safe place as you will be referring to it in a later lesson.

Exercise:

Please write detailed reflections for the following questions:

  1. Why is achieving happiness important to me?
  2. What currently brings me happiness in my life?
  3. What thoughts, actions, behaviors, or circumstances presently undermine happiness in my life?
  4. Is there a specific issue in my life at the moment that diminishes my happiness?
  5. What does an ideal life of happiness look like to me?

Exercise:

Now that you have completed your ‘happiness letter,” Invite others you know to write their own happiness letter.
